What are the Chacahua Lagoons and why are they worth visiting?

The Chacahua Lagoons are part of a protected National Park on the Oaxacan coast: an ecosystem of mangroves, channels, lagoons and an isolated beach where nature sets the pace. Unlike more touristy destinations in the area, Chacahua maintains a tranquil atmosphere with few buildings and a local community that lives from fishing and responsible tourism.

The main attraction is the boat ride through the mangrove channels, where you can spot birds, crocodiles (from a safe distance) and, in season, the famous nighttime bioluminescence. There's also a beach with waves for surfing, simple cabins to spend the night and eateries serving freshly caught fish.

Note

Chacahua isn't a quick day trip destination. If you want to enjoy it properly, consider staying at least one night to see the bioluminescence and explore at a relaxed pace.

How do you get to Chacahua from Puerto Escondido?

There are several ways to get there, depending on how much independence you want. All routes pass through Zapotalito, the dock where you catch the boat to Chacahua.

1

By your own vehicle (4x4 Jeep): take the coastal highway toward Río Grande, then the turnoff to Zapotalito. It's approximately 70 km and between 1.5 and 2 hours of driving. The road is mostly paved but has some rough sections.

2

By collective transport: vans leave Puerto Escondido for Río Grande, and from there others go to Zapotalito. It's cheaper but less flexible with schedules.

3

By organized tour: several agencies offer day trips that include transport, boat ride and food. Convenient if you don't want to worry about logistics.

4

By taxi or private transport: a direct option but more expensive. Useful if you're traveling in a group and can split the cost.

Tip

If you rent a Jeep with KORU, you can leave the vehicle parked in Zapotalito while you do the boat tour. There are parking areas near the dock.

What does the mangrove boat tour include?

Once in Zapotalito, you hire a boat with local boatmen. The typical ride takes between 1 and 2 hours (one way) and crosses channels surrounded by mangroves, where the water changes color depending on the light and depth.

The boat price varies depending on the number of people and whether it includes additional stops. Ask before boarding and negotiate respectfully; the boatmen make their living from this work.

When is the best time to see the bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence in Chacahua occurs thanks to plankton that glows when the water moves. It's not visible year-round or every night; ideal conditions are between May and November, especially on moonless nights with little artificial light.

Heads up

There's no guarantee you'll see bioluminescence. If it's your only goal, ask locals about conditions in the days before planning your visit.

What should you bring to Chacahua?

Chacahua is a rustic destination. There are no ATMs, shops are basic and cell signal is limited. Prepare to disconnect and bring the essentials.

Can you visit Chacahua and return the same day?

Yes, it's possible but tight. You need to leave Puerto Escondido early (before 8 am ideally), do the boat tour, spend a few hours on the beach and return before dark. If you want to see the bioluminescence, you necessarily need to stay overnight.

Note

Cabins in Chacahua are simple (some without constant electricity). If you need amenities, consider staying in Zapotalito or Río Grande and doing the tour as a day trip.

Is it safe to go to Chacahua?

Generally, yes. The Chacahua community lives from tourism and fishing, and visitors are welcomed. That said, like any remote destination, there are practical considerations to keep in mind.
