What is La Punta and why is everyone talking about it?
La Punta is the most bohemian and laid-back neighborhood in Puerto Escondido, located at the southern end of Zicatela beach. There are no big developments or chain stores here: dirt roads, wooden houses, cafes with ocean views and a community that blends local surfers, digital nomads and travelers seeking something different from the typical resort experience.
La Punta draws people in because it offers a different pace. Mornings are calm, afternoons buzz with music and conversation, and sunsets from the rocks are the kind that stay with you. It's a place to walk slowly, connect with the surroundings and let yourself be surprised without rushing.
Note
La Punta is best enjoyed with timing: quiet morning for walking and breakfast, afternoon for exploring shops and cafes, sunset from the rocks. Match your visit to the neighborhood's rhythm.
How to get to La Punta from your area? (Downtown, Zicatela, Airport)
La Punta is at the end of Zicatela beach, reachable by road or by walking along the sand if you're coming from the surf zone. From downtown Puerto Escondido, the drive takes between 10 and 20 minutes depending on traffic. From the airport, expect between 20 and 35 minutes.
You can also take a shared taxi from downtown or a mototaxi from Zicatela. If you're driving your own or rented vehicle, the road is paved until the entrance to the neighborhood; inside La Punta there are dirt sections in good condition.
Where to park and how to move around without getting in the way?
Parking in La Punta is limited and streets are narrow. Arriving early gives you more options for finding a good spot. Respect house entrances, don't block driveways and avoid parking on sand or vegetation.
Tip
Arrive early if driving, especially during high season. Bring cash for tips or small purchases, and make sure your phone is charged for photos and maps.
What's the best hour-by-hour plan? (morning to night)
La Punta has its own rhythm and each time of day offers something different. Here's a flexible structure to make the most of your visit without rushing.
Morning (8:00–11:00): Walk along the beach, watch local surfers, have breakfast at a cafe with ocean views. It's the calmest time.
Midday (11:00–14:00): Find shade, hydrate, rest. The sun on the Oaxacan coast is intense; don't underestimate the heat.
Afternoon (14:00–17:00): Browse artisan shops, grab something cool to drink, explore the alleys at a relaxed pace.
Sunset (17:00–19:00): Head to the rocks at the end of La Punta. This is the iconic moment: the sun dropping over the Pacific.
Night (19:00+): Dine at a local restaurant, enjoy live music if there is any, and leave calmly before it gets too dark.
Can you swim at La Punta? (ocean, currents and common sense)
La Punta has areas where you can enter the water, but also strong currents and rocks. It's not a pool beach: waves can change quickly and there are spots where the bottom drops off suddenly. Always observe before getting in, ask locals or surfers about the day's conditions.
If you see red or yellow flags, respect them. Never swim alone, especially if you don't know the ocean well. And if the waves look strong from shore, they're probably stronger than they appear.
Heads up
Currents at La Punta can be deceptive. Don't get overconfident even if the water looks calm. Respect the signs, listen to lifeguards if present, and never enter the water impaired or alone.
What to bring to La Punta? Quick checklist
You don't need to pack a full suitcase, but some basics will make your visit much more comfortable.
La Punta with style: community rules (noise, trash, photos)
La Punta is a real community where people live year-round, not just a backdrop for tourists. Keeping the relaxed atmosphere depends on everyone who visits.

What vehicle works best for La Punta? (Jeep 4x4 vs scooter vs on foot)
It depends on your day plan and where you're staying. If you're only going to La Punta, a scooter or mototaxi might be enough. But if you want to combine La Punta with other stops (Zicatela, viewpoints, nearby beaches), a 4x4 Jeep gives you more flexibility, comfort with air conditioning and space for everything you're carrying.
For groups of 3 or more people, the Jeep is usually more practical than multiple scooters. It also lets you store backpacks, beach gear and purchases without worrying about space.
