Which beach fits what you’re looking for?
Note
Quick rule: if unsure, ask lifeguards or locals about currents and flags that day before entering the sea.
Where to swim more calmly? (criteria, no promises)
Carrizalillo is often more protected, but follow flags and instructions. Bacocho is wide and can have strong currents; stay near crowds and monitored areas. Never assume “it was calm yesterday”.
Where to surf and what to know about the ocean?
Zicatela is for advanced surfers; beginners should take lessons at La Punta or Carrizalillo. Use a leash, check tides and respect wave priority.
Heads up
Swell and currents change fast. No guarantees: respect flags, avoid swimming alone and leave the water if you feel unsafe.
Which beach is best for sunset and social vibe?
Zicatela for bars and buzz, La Punta for boho chill on the sand, Bacocho for turtle release at sunset and big skies.
How to move between beaches without wasting time?
Morning: farther beaches (Coral/Bacocho) with a full tank.
Midday: Carrizalillo/Manzanillo to swim and eat nearby.
Afternoon: shift to La Punta for surf + cafés.
Sunset: Zicatela or Bacocho; head back with daylight if routes are new to you.
What to bring to the beach (checklist)
Reef-safe sunscreen, water, cap, light towel, cash for snacks/parking, waterproof phone sleeve, digital ID copy, and comfy sandals.
Tip
In rainy season carry a dry bag; in dry season avoid leaving items visible in the vehicle.
